COMPASS: Participatory art
Posted: December 11, 2008
Burchetta Glassblowing Studio and Gallery is a relatively new
addition to Wilmington's art scene. Glass artists John Burchetta
and Elizabeth Miede moved to Wilmington from Carmel, N.Y., in August
to set up a glass blowing studio and gallery on Red Cross Street.
"We got off the plane and fell in love," Meide said. "The
city is beautiful and the arts scene is happening. Where we came
from there wasn't a community arts movement, but here the art scene
is very community-oriented."
Burchetta and Meide will bring
the public into their studio by offering classes and workshops
for children and adults. This weekend, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday
and Sunday, Burchetta and Miede are offering glass-ornament-making
workshops. Participants can make two glass-blown ornaments to take
home, and the ornaments come with their own gift boxes, each of
which includes a photograph of the participant making the ornament.
Admission is $40 per person, and group discounts are available.
Burchetta
and Meide create everything from custom glasswork to tableware
to sculpture that they sell in their gallery and online at www.burchetta.com.
For
more information, visit the studio and gallery at 201 S. Red Cross
Street, or call 399-7614.
