For the 14th annual “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown” Resident Appreciation Day, all varieties of attractions will open their doors to New Hanover County residents, free of charge.
And “free” is especially appealing these days.
“Certainly everyone is watching their budgets, and free always fits into the budget. It will be interesting to see how the economy affects the turnout for an already very popular event,” said Connie Nelson, communications and public relations director for the Wilmington/Cape Fear Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau. In fact, the turnout may likely include residents of surrounding counties as well. Just this year, 28 of the 33 participating attractions have decided to open their doors to all visitors, not just residents of New Hanover County.
The event will go beyond providing one day of free entertainment. “This summer especially, people will probably visit family (here) for cheaper vacations. This event is also a good chance for residents to learn some information that they can share with their visitors this summer,” Nelson said.
In addition to yearly favorites, Tourist day will include many activities and attractions new to the event.
Some of the new participants include the Wilmington Sharks baseball team and the Burchetta Glassblowing Studio & Gallery. The baseball team will provide stadium tours, a bounce house, a speed pitch, and prize wheel. The glassblowing studio will give demonstrations and gallery tours.
Another new attraction is the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher’s outreach mobile classroom van. It will be set up in the parking lot beside the visitor information center at the Historic County Courthouse, and people can speak with educators and get up close and personal with some of Wilmington’s marine creatures.
